How Strong Are Your Core Vitals? Recent Google Core Vitals Update
Core Web Vitals are a set of factors Google uses to measure overall user experience. The Core Web Vitals measure load time, interactivity, and visual stability of content on the web pages as they load.

More specifically Core Web Vitals are:
Largest Contentful Paint– This is the time it takes for the main content on a page to load. The ideal time is 2.5 seconds or less.
Cumulative Layout Shift- This measures unexpected layout shifts of visual content on a page. The ideal cumulative layout shift should be less than 0.1.
First Input Delay- This is the time it takes for a page to become responsive. The ideal time is less than 100 ms.
In May 2021, Google confirmed that Core Web Vitals will become ranking signals in an update combining existing UX-related signals. The page experience signals include:
- Mobile-friendliness
- HTTPS-security
- Safe-browsing
- Intrusive interstitial guidelines
The user experience will have a greater effect on the website’s ranking so it is important to prepare your clients for the gradual algorithm rollout that started in June 2021.

Google Search Console
Using the Google Search Console, go to the tab ‘enhancements’ to see the site’s performance evaluation report against the Core Web Vitals.
The Google Search Console shows a list of affected URLs and the elements that need improvement. Areas that need improvement could include interactivity, visual stability, or improvements to load time.
Pagespeed Insights also helps users check affected pages offering both desktop and mobile speed insights. These insights are based on data from Google Chrome browsers. PageSpeed Insights also shows users a breakdown of all issues on specific pages which acts as a starting point for improvements.
If your clients are to hit the metrics, aim at meeting 75% of page uploads on all desktop and mobile devices. It is expected that Core Web Vitals will change from time to time so users must stay updated on new revisions.
More Features on the Google Core Vitals Update
The new Core Web Vitals update will also feature all news content in the Top Stories carousel as long as it meets the Google News Policies. Any page regardless of Core Web Vitals score will be eligible to appear on Top Stories without using the AMP format.
Google News Daily will also feature a comprehensive view of the top stories of the day. In addition, the AMP badge icon will no longer appear to indicate AMP content.
User experience will continue to be a top priority with new design trends expected to emerge. These trends will support better performance of the three Core Web Vital elements. Every improvement made to videos, fonts, images, and other technical elements will also speed up loading times to improve user experience.
Will Core Web Vitals Affect Ads?
Ads contribute significant revenue to most online stores. However, heavy Google ads consume a disproportionate share of device data and battery which negatively impacts user experience. Experimenting with different ad formats and resolving resizing issues can help your clients monetize their sites without slowing down load times which may hurt their ranking metrics.
High-quality content will continue to be a top-ranking factor on Google and sites offering great user experience will continue to rank better as we begin to see the impact of Core Web Vitals.
