What’s New in Magento 2.4.x? Features & News
Magento will be stopped in 2022!
Adobe-owned Magento kept its December 2019 promise and released Magento 2.4.0 in June 2020 and we have all the details on what to expect.
This latest version is said to be capable of accelerating business by including improvements to the core quality in the previous Magento 2.3.5-p1, over 30 security enhancements, and over 100 new fixes to the core code.
Magento 2.4 New Features
In addition to the long list of new features and bug fixes, Magento 2.4 also comes with:
- New and improved default search engine
- Two-factor authentication for enhanced security
- Improved media gallery
- Purchase approval workflows for Magento Commerce
- B2B enhancements to both buyer and seller approval experience
- Better storefront performance
- In-product guidance
From these improvements, it is clear Magento is listening to its community of businesses and putting in the work to create comprehensive solutions.
Magento 2.4 Key Highlights
Purchase Approval Workflows
This new function improves spending control for B2B buying companies and allows them to customise approval mechanisms for individual purchases through a simple form. Through this feature, approval rules can also be customised according to the number of SKUs, order value, shipping costs, and more.
Purchase approval workflows allow businesses to create as many rules as they need to achieve flexibility, assign multiple levels of approval, and assign specific roles. For instance, a business can limit purchases over a certain amount made by junior level buyers.
This function also dramatically improves B2B interactions by making it possible to approve, reject, and comment on purchase orders within the account.
Seller-Assisted Shopping
Magento administrators can now guide and assist customers with seller-assisted functionality. Administrators can troubleshoot at any part of the purchase process on the storefront and have full access to customer accounts.
This feature also makes it possible to guide buyers through custom functionalities on the storefront which dramatically saves buyers’ time by simply placing orders or creating quotes on their behalf.
In-store Pickup
The click and collect feature is great for retail businesses. It offers three major benefits:
- Improves conversion
- Upselling
- Improves synergy between brick-and-mortar and digital stores.
In-store pickup is native to Magento 2.4 and is available for both e-commerce and open source versions. The feature displays pickup locations, working hours, and when an order is ready for pickup, all at a single click. This feature can also be adjusted to accommodate curbside pickup.
PWA Enhancements
Magento 2.4 comes with the latest PWA Studio version for both open source and commerce. The Venia storefront experience offers a complete cart and checkout workflow and support for Venia UI components as well as an extensive framework to customise PWAStudio capabilities and efficiencies.
However, after the initial build, the feature still needs to be connected to extensions and requires maintenance for future versions. The high maintenance costs may not be justifiable for smaller businesses.
More Magento 2.4. Enhancements
- Faster reordering
- Faster checkout performance
- Scalability improvements such as Redis optimisations may result in improved performance
- Faster add-to-cart performance which significantly improves ordering time
- Some previously manual operations now automated with Composer Update Plugin
We recommend immediate upgrades to Magento 2.4 because not only does it support the latest technology, business performance is also significantly improved. In the current changing times, merchants need every advantage they can get to stay ahead of the competition. Magento 2.4 delivers the delicate push that speeds up their performance.
