Everything you need to know about WordPress 4.6

On 17th August 2016 WordPress 4.6, also named Pepper, was released for public use – just 4 months after the release of WordPress 4.5.

With over 270 developers supporting the new update the development was led by Dominik Schilling and support from translators around the world means that the new update is available in 52 languages.

As with all WordPress updates the latest developments make the admin area more organised, easier to use and ‘gets you where you need to be, faster’.

Some of the most significant changes include:

Efficient Updates

The new version of WordPress now means that you can carry out all of your updates, such as Plugins and Themes, on the same page, making the process more efficient and less time consuming.
You can also delete and edit plugins by staying on the same page, making it much easier and a much needed change in our eyes.

Broken Link Highlighting

WordPress now checks all of the links that added into the website’s content, if the link appears to be broken or incorrect the content editor will highlight this (similarly to how typos are highlighted) and will allow you to make changes before publishing your article.

Content Recovery

With the latest version of WordPress users no longer have to worry about constantly saving your content – it now does it for you. WordPress 4.6 saves the changes that you make to your content in the browser so if something does happen all of the content that you’ve written is safely stored away for you to come back to.

Native System Fonts

WordPress 4.6 uses native fonts, making the most of the fonts that you already have stored on your device which increases loading times and ‘makes you feel more at home’ wherever you are using WordPress.

‘Under the hood’ improvements

There are a large number of tech and development changes to the system including:

• Resource hints – helping your website load in a much quicker time
• Translations on demand – the new update will install the latest language packs for your plugins and themes as soon as they are available
• Meta registration API – this has been developed to support all types, descriptions and REST API visibility
• JavaScript library updates – Masonry 3.3.2, imagesLoaded 3.2.0, MediaElement.js 2.22.0, TinyMCE 4.4.1, and Backbone.js 1.3.3 are bundled
• Multisite – the new update means that the admin area loads in a much quicker time, making you more efficient
