Update to Php 7.4 For Magento Commerce Releases!

Adobe Commerce 2.4.2-p1 and 2.3.7 is now available. Formerly known as Magento Commerce, the release packages are now available via account.magento.com and repo.magento.com. These new updates resolve a variety of general vulnerabilities as well as disable some credit card information features for additional security.

Magento 2.3.7 also comes with support for PHP7.4 as support for PHP 7.3 ends in December 2021. We strongly recommend upgrading your clients to Adobe commerce 2.4 and PHP7.4 which will not only create PCI compliance but also keep their sites secure and create a cost-effective solution.

In the 2021 Adobe Summit, we learned about new capabilities for Adobe Commerce. The new solutions not only improve e-commerce but also enable merchants to open new channels.

Adobe Commerce 2.4.2-p1 and 2.3.7

The latest Adobe Commerce releases mainly focus on upgrading to PHP 7.4 and security updates. COVID-19 drove digital commerce into becoming the primary driver of business growth for most industries and 2020 has seen buyers spend billions on online business platforms. It is therefore critical for all digital commerce platforms need to focus on keeping their sites secure.

In comes Adobe Commerce 2.4.2-p1 and 2.3.7.

As earlier discussed, these new releases focus on security updates for customers. Adobe Commerce 2.3.7 also comes with support for PHP 7.4 as well as in-product guidance which boosts merchants growth.

Compatibility Considerations

If your clients have not upgraded to Magento 2.4, it is important to note that Magento 2.3.7 comes with backward incompatible changes. Migration from PHPUnit 6 to PHPUnit 9 is likely to affect a variety of tests including:

  • Static
  • Unit
  • API Functional
  • Integration
  • Magento Functional Testing Framework

Vendors using the Magento Marketplace extension must ensure the extensions are compatible with PHP7.4 before publishing new versions for Magento 2.3.7. It is also important to test and evaluate client stores before running the live site on PHP 7.4.

Additional support for PHP7.4 will ensure PHP compatibility for Magento 2.3 in the 2.3.x release line. However, we still strongly recommend evaluating and prioritising upgrading your clients’ sites to Magento 2.4.

This will secure vendor stores and position them for long-term success.

Important Timelines

  • PHP 7.3 support ends December 2021
  • Adobe Commerce 2.3.x ends support in April 2022
  • Adobe Commerce 2.3.7 includes PHP 7.4 support to ensure 2.3 line support for merchants until end of support in early 2022

Be on the lookout for Adobe commerce 2.4.3 which comes in August. The new release is sure to have more important updates and plenty of exciting features.
